Friedel Klussmann Grant Recipients
SFB Grants Awarded During First Three Quarters 2008
San Francisco Beautiful, through its Friedel Klussmann Neighborhood Improvement Grants Program, has made a noticeable impact on the beauty and safety our city’s playgrounds and open spaces and the accessibility to some of its many special places. The 2008 grants to date have been made possible by the generosity of the Walter and Elise Haas Fund and the Friese Family Fund.
Slow Food Nation/Civic Center Plaza Victory Garden, $5,000 to build the pathways making this Victory Garden ADA-compliant.
Flynn Elementary PTA, $2,500 to plant trees at Flynn Elementary on Cesar Chavez in the Mission District.
San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance, Growing Greener Schoolgrounds Conference, $2,500 for expenses associated with the conference held on October 11-12 (www.sfgreenschools.org/conference_08).
The Neighborhood Parks Council, $5,000 toward the Playground Initiative Sand Replacement Project to make the Herz, Joe DiMaggio and Silver Terrace Playgrounds safer and more usable for kids.
Friends of Friends of Fallen Bridge Mini-Park, $5,000 to build a bench that will serve as a retaining wall as well asa tree planter.
Friends of Balboa Park Playground, $5,000 for creating a retaining wall with mosaic tile art and a pathway into the park.
Friends of Presidio Heights Playground, $5,000 to renovate and beautify the playground entryway with a crabapple arbor, privet hedge and vines.
2007 Grant Recipients
San Francisco Beautiful awarded $59,492 in 2007 Friedel Klussmann Grants to projects that beautify open spaces, add amenities to our park system and turn public schoolyards into green spaces.
The 2007-schoolyard improvement grants were made possible by the Mary A. Crocker Trust.
James Lick Middle School, Carlos Santana Peace Garden: $5,400 for plant materials for the garden.
Willie L. Brown Jr. Academy School Garden: $2,800 for native plants.
West Portal Elementary School Parents Club Tree Planting: $4,500 for trees planted around the play yard.
Friends of Victoria Manalo Draves Park Community Bulletin Board: $5,000 for a community bulletin board to post information about park clean-up days and other events.
Sunset Youth Services, Judah Street Beautification: $2,792 to replace the concrete sidewalk with permeable landscaping.

Hayes Valley Neighborhood Parks Group, Koshland Park Community Learning Garden: $5,000 for irrigation, plants and tree trimming.
Trust for Public Land, Potrero Hill Park Playground Revitalization Project: $10,000 for landscaping materials for the park's seating area.
Friends of Dolores Park Playground, Playground Beautification Project: $5,000 to screen a dumpster near the playground and to build a community information kiosk.
Friends of Upper Douglass Dog Park, Water Fountain: $5,000 to purchase and install a water fountain designed for both dogs and people.
Alemany Resident Management Corp./Alemany Farm Entrance and Education Circle Beautification Projects: $7,000 to beautify the Farm with California native plants, vines and trees and to install an irrigation system.
Lower 24th Street Merchant and Neighborhood Association, 24th Street Mini-Park Deck Extension: $5,000 to extend a deck to increase play space.
The Women's Building, 'Maestrapeace' Mural Repair: $2,000 to repair this special public art piece.

In 2006, SFB awarded over $70,000 to community improvement projects.
Buena Vista Elementary School PTA, Potrero del Sol Park Labyrinth: $5,000 to install a labyrinth.
Friends of Joe DiMaggio Playground, Bocce Court Furnishings: $5,000 for picnic tables and seating.
Friends of Boeddekker Park, Campaign to Renovate Boeddekker Park Play Areas: $5,000 to help fund a new climbing structure in the Tenderloin.
Mission Science Workshop, Mission Organic Garden: $5,000 for planter boxes and other supplies at Mission High School’s garden.
Children’s Village Child Development Center Mural Project: $4,000 for supplies for a colorful South of Market mosaic tile mural.
16th Avenue Tiled Steps: $3,411 for north-side plantings and an irrigation system.
Mission Creek Conservancy, Mission Creek Bank Restoration: $5,000 for restoring native plants along Mission Creek.
Noe Valley Association Community Benefits District (CBD), Greening and Beautification Project/Tree Planting: $3,250 for 65 trees along 24th Street.
Brooks Park Teaching Message Poles: $2,200 for totem-like poles serving as discussion starters and windbreaks.
Friends of McLaren Park, McNab Lake Restoration Project: $5,000 to remove algae from the lake and to introduce appropriate plants.
Friends of Duboce Park, Scott Street Labyrinth Project: $5,000 for a labyrinth.
San Jose/Guerrero Coalition to Save our Streets, Greening Guerrero: $8,000 for median planting between 23rd and 24th Streets.
Sherman Elementary School, Green Schoolyard Project: $6,100 for an irrigation system, trees and landscaping planted and maintained by students and school volunteers.
The Watershed Project, San Francisco Kids in Gardens Program: $2,500 for workshop supplies, printing, worms and worm bins, and plant propagation supplies.
Garden for the Environment: $6,396 to replace the old irrigation system, tools and wheelchair accessible planter bed at this 7th and Lawton educational garden.
2005 Grant Recipients
Visitacion Valley Greenway Project, Herb Garden and Viewing Pavilion: $6,660 for an herb garden at Arleta and Teddy Avenues and a community viewing pavilion.
Friends of the Urban Forest, Visitacion Valley Neighborhood Tree Planting: $5,000 to supplement the cost to residents for up to 50 trees at $100 per tree.
Harkness Avenue Community Garden: $3,000 for plant materials and irrigation supplies for a community garden in Visitacion Valley.
Friends of Sterling Park: $5,000 for a view terrace; $3,000 committed for stairway garden supplies.
Quesada Gardens Initiative: $8,000 to install an irrigation system in a community garden planted in a garbage-strewn median strip in Bayview Hunters Point.
Brooks Park, Community Garden Planter Boxes: $5,000 to build additional garden boxes and other park amenities.
Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, Ritz Hotel Façade Improvement Project: $5,000 to paint the cornice, trim and windows and for detailing the architectural embellishments of this SRO hotel in the Tenderloin.
Mona Caron's Botanical Mural: $5,000 for supplies to complete a botanical mural on a retaining wall at Church and 22nd Streets.
Hillcrest Elementary School, Mosaic Tile Mural Project: $5,000 for supplies and an art consultant to work with students creating the tile artwork.
Literacy for Environmental Justice, Greening the Living Classroom: $5,000 committed to create native plant gardens around this soon-to-be-built environmental education center at Heron's Head Park.
The Watershed Project’s San Francisco Kids in Gardens Program: $2,500 for a training workshop for San Francisco public school teachers on building and sustaining school gardens.
Neighborhood Parks Council, Pier 52 Kiosk Project: $2,300 to transform a dilapidated kiosk near Mission Bay into an educational venue about the Bay Trail, the city's estuary system and watershed, and the history of the waterfront.
San Francisco Clean City Coalition, Tool Lending Center: $5,000 to purchase tools for neighborhood beautification projects.
Lake Merced Task Force, Master Plan Phase 1: $5,000 for a consultant to review all past lake studies and do a "gap analysis" to determine what remains to be done in order to create a Master Plan.
2004 Grant Recipients
16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project: $5,000 for non-slip tread tiles for this very visible public stairway at 16th Avenue and Moraga.
Ord Triangle Park Beautification Project, The Friends of Ord Triangle Park: $4,952 for drip irrigation and replacing asphalt with decomposed granite. The park, located at 17th, Douglass, Corbett and Ord Streets has been cared for by Zephyr Realty and surrounding neighbors.
Harkness Avenue Beautification Project, Visitacion Valley Planning Alliance/Harkness Avenue Neighbors: $3,500 for the installation of a water main to provide water for a proposed community garden.
Chinatown Alleyway Youth Stewardship Project: The Chinatown Community Development Center: $2,500 for outreach and cleaning supplies. The project hires teenagers to monitor, pick up litter and paint out graffiti on Chinatown alleyways.
Alamo Square Water Fountain, District 5 Dog Owners and Guardians (D5DOG): $2,100 for the installation of a Victorian-era designed water fountain to serve both humans and dogs.
Monroe Elementary School PTA, Lisbon Street Mosaic Mural: $3,000 for the design and materials to create a butterfly theme mosaic tile mural at 260 Madrid Street.
Garden of Humanitarians, United Humanitarian Mission: $4,351 for benches, seating and repair work at this Golden Gate Park garden area at 8th and Fulton Streets. School will children come to this open-air classroom to learn about the efforts of humanitarians from around the world.
San Francisco Clean City Coalition and North Beach Partnership Sidewalk Sweeping Program: $2,000 for supplies to enable workers to clean for one year in the area between Powell and Stockton and Greenwich and Broadway. This transitional employment program employs the homeless while simultaneously beautifying North Beach.
Franconia Street Public Stairway Improvement Committee, Franconia Street Public Stairway Improvement Project: $5,000 for materials to build-out the Franconia Street stairway on the North-East Slope of Bernal Heights. This steep pathway between Rutledge and Montcalm Streets has for generations provided access to this area that until recently still had unpaved streets. It is one of the many stairways featured in Adah Bakalinsky's book Stairway Walks in San Francisco. (See back page for details on San Francisco Beautiful's fundraiser featuring Adah.)
S.F. Clean City Coalition's StreetFacts Program: $1500 for five PDAs for the Polk Gulch pilot study. The equipment will be used by volunteers to evaluate cited commercial district locations and then channel information to DPW's clean streets and sidewalks program.
Portola Neighborhood Tree Planting (through FUF): $2500 to fund up to $100 for 25 trees.
SF Police Department/Clean City Coalition (fiscal agent), Graffiti Abatement Program: $2500 for five digital cameras.
Lakeshore Elementary School PTA, Garden Classroom Project: $2,500 for plants, Benderboard, benches, irrigation and soil amendments for the garden.
Golden Gate Heights Neighborhood Group, Native Plant Restoration Project: $1,745 for plants and soil amendments, tiles for borders to prevent erosion and supplies to do outreach to the neighborhood.
CounterPULSE, Market Street Railway Mural: $1250 for solvents, anti-graffiti varnish and other supplies to keep the mural graffiti-free.
S.F. Green Schoolyard Alliance, 2004 Growing Greener School Grounds Conference: $5000 for construction materials for the 18 workshops and workshop instructor honoraria.
Nob Hill Foundation, Jones Street Pump Station Garden: $2000 for the initial work of re-landscaping the front area with native plants and to put in new fencing and lighting.
