Civic Initiatives

San Francisco Beautiful acts for the benefit of all who live, work, and play in San Francisco.

We participate in civic initiatives to promote sustainable urban planning, policies, and programs that create, preserve and enhance San Francisco's scenic beauty.

Protecting the Public Realm: Our streets, sidewalks, plazas, and parks are under increasing assault from private interests. San Francisco Beautiful is taking immediate steps to control these blighting influences.

More than 25 neighborhood organizations have joined our efforts to protect the public right-of-way from encroaching private interests. In August 2011 we filed a lawsuit to ensure adequate environmental review of a plan to construct more than 700 private utility boxes on our public sidewalks.

In an effort to halt the approval and construction of utility box permits, we have requested the Court pause the approval and construction of utility boxes granted by the City of San Francisco. The San Francisco Superior Court has ruled in our favor, issuing a "stay" motion on further approval and construction of AT&T utility boxes.

However, dozens of permits for these cabinets have been already been approved. With support and encouragement from SFB and our neighborhood coalition, hundreds of citizen complaints have been received by the city and DPW hearings are now underway.

You can protest exisiting utility box permits with these easy instructions. Once you protest a utility box permit, a hearing will be scheduled in front of a DPW officer.

All protest hearings are heard in Room 416, City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco, CA 94102

The next protest hearing is scheduled December 7. Here is the list and map of protested utility box permits to be heard on that date.

The following protest hearing scheduled December 14. Here is the list and map of protested utility box permits to be heard on that date.

Activating Mid Market: We are working with the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, the Planning Department, the Department of Public Works, HOK, the Central Market Community Benefit District, and the Arts Commission to pilot physical and programmatic improvements on Market Street.
